Caregivers

As a caregiver, you have options to come to Canada to become a permanent resident or work temporarily.
Permanent residence for caregivers
Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot
As of June ۱۸, ۲۰۱۹, you may be able to apply for permanent residence through the Home Child Care Provider Pilot or Home Support Worker Pilot if you:
• meet the eligibility requirements, and
• have a job offer to work in one of these occupations
Interim Pathway for Caregivers
The Interim Pathway for Caregivers will open again for ۳ months starting July ۸, ۲۰۱۹.
If you need to send us your language test results or Educational Credential Assessment for an application you already submitted, follow the instructions in the guide.
Live-in Caregiver Program
The Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) is closed to new applicants.
You can only apply for permanent residence through the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) if you have at least ۲ years of work experience in the program and:
• you’re already working in Canada with an LCP work permit, or
• you were approved for your first LCP work permit based on a Labour Market Impact Assessment submitted to Employment and Social Development Canada on or before November ۳۰, ۲۰۱۴
If you have work experience in Canada as a caregiver but don’t qualify for either of the options above, you may be eligible to immigrate to Canada through a different program.
Temporary work for caregivers
If you don’t meet the requirements for permanent residence as a caregiver, you may be able to work temporarily.
Apply to extend your work permit
If you’re currently working in Canada as a caregiver, you may be eligible to extend your work permit through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).
Your employer will need to get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) first.
Caring for Children (*terminated June ۱۸, ۲۰۱۹)
In order to qualify for Canadian Immigration under the Caring for Children program, caregivers must:
• Have a minimum of ۲۴ months (within the past four years, or ۴۸ months) of full-time work experience (at least ۳۰ hours per week) in Canada as a home childcare provider, with a valid work permit;
o Note: Applicants can have breaks in employment (for example, periods where you were not employed, sick leave, parental leave)
• Meet the description of a home childcare provider as defined by NOC ۴۴۱۱;
o Applicants will need to show they performed the duties in the job description, including most of the main duties listed.
• Have completed a one-year Canadian post-secondary credential, or equivalent foreign credential proven with an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA); and
• Prove minimum language ability of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) ۵ for one of Canada’s two official languages, English or French.
Applicants must have cared for children under the age of ۱۸, in their own home or in their employer’s home. Caregivers do not need to have lived in their employer’s home to be considered eligible. Foster parents are not eligible to apply under this program.
Caring for People with High Medical Needs (*terminated June ۱۸, ۲۰۱۹)
In order to qualify for Canadian Immigration under the Caring for People with High Medical Needs program, caregivers must have:
• A minimum of ۲۴ months (within the past four years, or ۴۸ months) of full-time work experience (at least ۳۰ hours per week) in Canada as:
o Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (۳۰۱۲)
o Licensed practical nurses (۳۲۳۳)
o Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates (۳۴۱۳)
o Home support workers and related occupations (۴۴۱۲)
 Housekeepers are not eligible under this occupation classification.
• Demonstrate a license to practice in Canada if work experience in Canada was as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse (NOC ۳۰۱۲) or as a licensed practical nurse (NOC ۳۲۳۳);
• Have completed a one-year Canadian post-secondary credential, or equivalent foreign credential proven with an ECA; and
• Prove minimum language ability for one of Canada’s two official languages, English or French.
o NOC ۳۰۱۲ must demonstrate CLB ۷
o NOC ۳۲۳۳, ۳۴۱۳, OR ۴۴۱۲ must demonstrate CLB ۵
Note: Applicants can have breaks in employment (for example, periods where you were not employed, sick leave, parental leave).
